Peanut butter — a world of possibilities

Peanut butter — a world of possibilities

Peanuts Peanut butter is a staple in cupboards around the UK — but there’s more to this humble spread than you think…

Go nuts for peanuts

Spread it on your toast, pair it with jam in a sandwich or bake it into cookies every now and again — whatever you use peanut butter for, we’re about to blow your mind.

Peanut butter is actually an amazingly versatile ingredient that can be used a whole bunch of ways you’ve probably never heard of.

To go through every use of this kitchen-staple would take more blog space than we’ve got here (Google it, you’ll see). So we’ve trawled the internet for some of the most interesting and intriguing uses for this most modest of ingredients, and we’ve put together a list of three favourites.

Three ways peanut butter could change your life

  1. To make hummus

The popularity of hummus has exploded in the past few years, with many people starting to make their own at home. But if you’ve ever tried this yourself, you’ll know that there’s one ingredient that’s not common in most kitchens — tahini. Luckily, peanut butter makes a delicious alternative — and one that you’re more likely to have in the cupboard.

  1. To stop hiccups

You’ve tried all the tricks to stop hiccups — holding your breath, giving yourself a fright, drinking water while pinching your nose — but peanut butter could hold the cure. Slowly eating a spoonful supposedly does the trick, by changing the way you breathe. It worked on a chronic hiccuper, and it could work for you too. Plus you get to eat a spoonful of peanut butter. Win-win.

  1. To clean your house

This could be the most surprising of all the uses we found for peanut butter — as a household cleaner. Strange as it may sound, many people use peanut butter as a cleaning product that’s free of harsh chemicals. It can apparently get stains off floors, chewing gum out of hair, and the garlic smell off your hands. We haven’t tried any of these ourselves though, so we take no responsibility for your house smelling like a peanut-butter factory!

Celebrating versatility

Here’s another interesting fact about peanuts: they’re not actually nuts, they’re legumes (in the same family as lentils and peas. If you’re looking for real nuts (and peanuts for that matter) then head over to your 24.

Your micromarket has a wide selection of healthy fruit, nut and seed mixes — like our Healthy Ideas fruit and nut mix and Graze natural energy nuts box — full of fibre and packed with protein.
